Child Spirit

Watching children explore nature or play on a beach yields moments of pure inspiration.

Their inquisitiveness enchants me and is by far my most illuminating source of inspiration. A little girl rushing to face the world… a small boy learning to climb… the wonder of a blossom or simply running, skipping… broadening their world… growing. They help us expand and keep us in touch with our roots and fundamental values. They bring out the best in us!

When I accept a commission, I spend a lot of time getting to know both the children and the parents, showing them my other paintings and, most of all, letting the kids play with my paints and brushes.

Only when that special bond has been formed and the child trusts me enough to open up and behave natural and relaxed, am I able to capture an image that represents a small core of that child’s spirit.

“The magical combination of sea and children makes the ideal subject matter for artist Christel Ibsen, whose work reflects the sheer pleasure of a child at play. In the Reflections exhibition, Christel’s paintings exude the carefree existence of youth… Christel is enjoying becoming even more creative with her seascapes, applying thick layers of paint and varnish to recreate the movement of the waves…”
